Call - Research Chair in Science and Society (Univ of Ottawa)

Deadline: 31 July 2016

Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Science and Society - University of Ottawa, Canada
Applications: July 31, 2016

TIER 2 CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR IN SCIENCE AND SOCIETY The University of Ottawa invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Science and Society. We are seeking an outstanding scholar in the sociology of science who is engaged in innovative and world-class research focusing on science-society relations (e.g., public engagement with science, citizen science, science and technology studies, technology and society). The successful candidate is expected to assume a leadership role at the University’s Institute for Science, Society and Policy (ISSP), whose members explore the diverse interfaces between and among science, society and public policy. The ISSP boasts research, outreach and knowledge mobilization programs at the local, national and international levels; it has recognized expertise in policy for science (science, technology and innovation policy; science governance), science for policy (evidence-based decision-making) and governance of emerging technologies (regulation; responsible research and innovation). It has recently launched a collaborative graduate program at the master’s level. The Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Science and Society will enhance and strengthen the ISSP’s research and training capacity in the crucial interface between science and society.
The Chairholder will join an active network of scholars, fellows, students and partners from a wide variety of disciplines, with whom he or she will be expected to establish links and research collaborations both within and beyond the Institute.

The successful candidate will be offered a tenure-track position in the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies (SSAS). The SSAS offers programs in Sociology at the undergraduate and graduate levels and programs in Anthropology at the undergraduate and master’s level. It has been recognized as one of the 100 best sociology departments in the world by QS World University Rankings 2014.

Tier 2 CRCs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field (i.e., candidates have normally less than 10 years since obtaining their highest degree at the time of nomination). If the retained candidate earned his/her highest degree more than 10 years ago (e.g., career breaks such as maternity, parental or sick leave, clinical training, etc.), the candidate’s eligibility may be first assessed by the Chairs Program’s Tier 2 Justification process.
For more information regarding CRC Program eligibility criteria, please consult the following webpage:
http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/nomination-mise_en_candidature-eng.aspx#nominees.
New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

Required Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent, superior achievement in the CRC’s identified area(s), an exceptional profile with respect to research, interdisciplinary collaborations and graduate training, demonstrate the ability to obtain external research funds, and excellent communication skills. All professors in the Faculty of Social Sciences are expected to be actively bilingual to obtain tenure.

Rank and salary: Regular academic tenure-track appointment in the relevant Faculty, with a salary consistent with the collective agreement of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa.

Application Package: Interested scholars are invited to submit an application consisting of the following:
• A cover letter;
