SUMMARY:Evento final do Projeto "CUIDAR - Culturas de Resiliência de Desastres entre Crianças e Jovens"
DESCRIPTION:Neste evento irão ser apresentadas as principais conclusões do projeto a uma audiência internacional de decisores\, profissionais e investigadores. Os participantes vão também poder discutir o principal resultado do projeto – um referencial para a gestão de catástrofes centrado nas crianças em contexto europeu\, que irá ajudar todos aqueles que trabalham no campo das emergências a promover o envolvimento de crianças e jovens na redução do risco. \nCrianças e jovens que integraram as atividades da CUIDAR em países parceiros irão participar ativamente durante o evento. Também teremos uma importante comunicação da Professora Lori Peek\, Diretora do Centro de Catástrofes Naturais\, da Universidade de Colorado-Boulder\, EUA\, e coautora\, com Alice Fothergill\, da obra “Children of Katrina”\, um estudo longitudinal sobre a recuperação de crianças na sequência dessa catástrofe. \nA participação na conferência é gratuita\, mas os participantes devem inscrever-se no website do evento: http://cuidarfinale.ics.ulisboa.pt/registration/. \nParalelamente ao evento\, estamos também a receber propostas de posters sobre projetos relacionados com a redução de risco de catástrofes\, entendimentos sobre situações de catástrofe/emergência e/ou as perspectivas de crianças e jovens (prazo de 20 de março). SUMMARY:International Conference on Institutional Reforms for an Entrepreneurial Society (FIRES)
DESCRIPTION:To get Europe back on the road to inclusive\, sustainable growth we need to (re)kindle Europe’s entrepreneurial spirit. This transition requires Financial and Institutional Reforms for an Entrepreneurial Society (FIRES). In this project we bring together scholars from such diverse fields as history\, economics\, geography and law to formulate such a reform strategy. Moreover\, the project involves relevant stakeholders in Europe’s future.\nThis Horizon2020 project develops a seven step process to formulate a tailored reform strategy. It builds on European regions’ rich and diverse history\, assesses the bottlenecks in the entrepreneurial ecosystem\, surveys relevant stakeholders in that ecosystem and then proposes fitting interventions from a menu of research based policy proposals to improve the situation. Individually\, but especially together\, these proposals in the realms of finance\, labor and knowledge enable the more small scale\, experimental and innovative bottom up activity that is needed to restore inclusive\, innovative and sustainable growth to the European Union as a whole\, its member states and regions. To ensure practical relevance and applicability the project engaged relevant stakeholders throughout the project. At our concluding event on May 25th in Brussels we present our proposed method and engage with our stakeholders one last time. SUMMARY:Seminário CRIA: "Exploring contradictory politics of displacement: São Paulo’s humanitarianism and occupy movements"\, por Heike Drotbohm (Department of Anthropology and African Studies Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nIn the Brazilian megalopolis of São Paulo multiple types of poor and mobile populations share the need for shelter\, legal protection and the access to social rights. Migrants and refugees\, who currently reach the city in their search for a better place of living\, have to interpret the city’s networks and institutions\, their logics of differentiation as well as their own position vis-à-vis other vulnerable groups. In my talk I will concentrate on the notion of displacement\, which is currently employed both in the field of humanitarian aid as well as by occupy movements\, who put it at the center of their social\, legal and public acts of resistance. As I intend to show\, the term and its political implications prove to be contradictory for people who have experienced dispossession and are asked to join the fight against neoliberal modes of property.

A verdade é que\, sendo transversais\, as desigualdades de género tendem a produzir efeitos muito diferentes consoante as classes sociais\, as gerações e as regiões analisadas. E este estudo procura mapear as desigualdades de género em Portugal em comparação com os restantes países da Europa. \nSerá que o género condiciona as oportunidades concedidas às mulheres? Como se reparte o trabalho remunerado e não remunerado – nomeadamente o tempo despendido a cuidar da casa e da família – entre homens e mulheres? SUMMARY:Seminário CRIA: "Extractive Development in Latin America: Gender\, Resistance and State Control"\, por Kalowatie Deonandan (University of Saskatchewan)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nThe explicit violence unleashed against land and environmental defenders opposed to extractive industry development is garnering global attention\, especially in the wake of the murder of such prominent activists as Honduras’ Berta Cáceres. Less known but equally significant are the more indirect forms of violence that target these defenders to neutralize or contain their activism. This analysis draws on Lara Coleman and Karen Tucker’s (2011) concept of “discipling dissent\,” borrowed from Michel Foucault’s (1995) “discipline and punish\,” to examine the range of disciplinary tools marshalled against anti-mining activists. Focussing on the disciplinary tactics of the state and its allies (for the national elites\, transnational corporations\, the military and the paramilitary forces)\, the paper argues that these strategies not only work to neutralize dissent\, but their impacts are also gendered.

Regulators interfere more and more in professional work models and decisions to better control health systems performance and to enhance transparency\, but so do empowered citizens in the defence of their rights as patients. Scientific knowledge is often called upon to improve the governance of health systems by providing clinical protocols and guidelines with evidence on effectiveness and efficiency. Nevertheless\, the tensions involving rights\, knowledge\, and trust in health have been widely acknowledged. \nMoreover\, events such as the ongoing global warming\, the latest financial and economic crisis\, or the increasing number of refugees not only highlight that old tensions in health have persisted over time but also testify to the rise of new paradoxes linking rights\, knowledge and trust. Health inequalities increased in the 21st century\, the expected functioning of health systems often do not meet users´ and professionals´ needs\, and the strengthened political and civil rights are constantly under challenge. \nHealth professionals continue to play a key mediation role between evidence and users despite professional values\, commitment and ethics are under growing criticism\, hence a seemingly contradictory link between distrust of and dependence on expert knowledge. This paradox coexists with market-driven dynamics in which users are turned into consumers and\, together with professionals\, they are made accountable for individual decisions. The diversity of scientific and lay rationalities makes the different knowledge rather difficult to reconcile\, and the expectation of certainty in evidence-based truth is virtually unattainable. More established health care professions and emerging actors including the so-named complementary and alternative practitioners compete for their own place in the production of truths\, while empowered citizens claim the right to decide freely on important events concerning their lives regardless of experts´ evidence (e.g. death and birth). The role of private investors in R&D is also still not entirely clear with regard to public regulation and science agenda setting. \nThe Scientific Committee is now accepting proposals for high quality\, timely\, innovative\, and also educational\, sessions related to the overall idea of tensions and paradoxes related to rights\, knowledge\, and trust in health resulting from broad social\, political\, and economic transformations to be presented at the ESHMS 17th Biennial Congress\, June 7-8\, 2018 in Lisbon\, Portugal. \nSuggested topics may include\, but are not limited to:\n– Social inequalities in health\, disease and death\n– Effects of social movements on health\n– Adaptation of work models to specific conditions and needs\n– Living and experiencing illness in contexts of crises (e.g. economic\, environmental\, humanitarian)\n– Users´ experience in accessing healthcare\n– Interactions between practitioners-patients\, practitioners-practitioners and practitioners-regulators\n– Features of trust in expert health knowledge\n– The creation and overcome of scientific boundaries in health\n– Measuring and putting in practice evidence-based procedures\n– Lay knowledge and use of evidence-based procedures in health\n– Combining different forms of evidence in health\n– Effects of the market on the provision of care and research agendas\n– Effects of accountability on professionals´ practice and patients´ decisions\n– Ethical dilemmas in health (e.g. death and birth)\n– Climate change and health\n– Social uses of health technologies \nTarget audience\nSociologists\, other social scientists\, and scholars in interdisciplinary fields related to medicine\, health\, and illness. Scholars in medical humanities\, public health\, governance and administrative sciences are particularly encouraged to participate. \nSession proposals\nSession proposals must be submitted in English and consist of: \n\nTitle\nExtended abstract (max 500 words)\nSubmitter´s name\, filiation and email\nSubmitter´s Bionote (max. 100 words)\n\nSession organizers role in the meeting\nThe expectation is that the conference runs as smoothly and pleasant as possible. Session organizers therefore play a key role in ensuring the success of their sessions. Always in close dialogue with the conference host\, their role in the meeting includes:\n– Reviewing and deciding on the acceptance or rejection of the paper proposals submitted to the session\n– Liaising with the conference organization and participants in the session. \nAdditional information\n– The conference language will be English.\n– All rooms are equipped with a PC\, a projector and a screen.\n– Every session has one session organizer who is the main interlocutor with the conference Host and participants. A second co-organizer is allowed.\n– Session organizers can organize one session only\, although they can be co-organizers of another session.\n– Session organizers are allowed to submit papers to the conference.\n– Session organizers are required to register and pay the registration fee. \nSubmission of Session proposals All proposals should be submitted by electronic mail to eshms2018@iscte.pt and to the Conference Host\, Tiago Correia (tiago.correia@iscte.pt). \nCall for sessions proposals \nProposals will be accepted beginning February 2017 through 15 April\, 2017.\nSubmitters will receive notification by late June as to the disposition of session submissions.
