Monsters Summer School III: “Tracing, remembering and reclaiming queer lives”
(18-22 September | Centre for Social Studies | University of Coimbra)

I claim: my right to be a monster […]
My right to explore myself
To reinvent myself
To take my mutation as my noble exercise.
Susy Shock |“yo monstruo mio”

The image of the monster has been historically used to epitomise danger, abnormality, sin. Even before angels, monsters were portrayed as messengers who anticipated catastrophes, such as storms and other dramatic events which would be too strong to be explained. Only good behaviour, submission to rules or faith into another inexplicable bigger entity, such as magic, witchcraft or religion, could prevent societies from being touched by monsters.

The othering of monsters – or monsters as estranged from an imagined “us” – is part of the cultural narrative that dismisses the complexity of what we call humans, contributing to the binary division between good and bad, silencing all of which exists in-between. Indeed, monsters inhabit the spaces in-between narrow definitions and expose the failure of rigid divisions between “normal” and “abnormal”. Ultimately, the figure of monsters confronts us with the precariousness of by-default normativities, triggering the need to rethink what humanity is, and who counts as a human being, especially under the current political backlash against gender and sexual diversity.

The Monsters Summer School III embraces monstrosity in what it offers regarding the undoing of binaries and the celebration of embodied differences. We aim to trace, remember and reclaim monsters through a queer lens. We want to explore monsters as a possible theoretical figuration to escape mainstream celebrations of humanity and to embrace the vivid possibilities offered by interdisciplinary, boundary-crossing contributions from different fields of knowledge. We aim at creating spaces to discuss contributions and experiences that often fall out of the map even within critical studies. Finally, we interrogate the possibilities of creating knowledge from places of estrangement regarding mainstream sources of knowledge production in the academic fields of LGBTQI+ and critical studies.

2nd ISUP International Summerschool | On war and peace: how tensions and conflicts cross societies (3- 7 july | Porto)

Today we are living in a declared war in Europe. A devastating war. But have we ever lived in peace? How do ‘wars’ rage in various spheres of society (politics, religion, economics, class structure, new and old media, gender, ethnicity…)? What are the triggers of societal clashes? What role do conflicts play in social (re)composition? What is happening with the desocialisation that is spreading in everyday life? What social “voids” are being created? Can consensuses sometimes also have harmful consequences in the reproduction of conformism and the status quo? What mediation can be created between antagonisms? How are they solved? On what scales? What role does the academy play in the analysis of these disputes?

It is urgent to create a time and a space for critical discussion that allows for establishing solid bridges between the university and the city in addressing these issues. The school’s programme includes lectures, round tables, talking circles, shared reading sessions and also workshops, guided tours and cultural moments in collaboration with local artists and organizations.

Prague Summer Schools – request for cooperation

This year we are organising the 20th edition of the summer school, which will take place from July 1 to July 8, 2023. Some of the topics are sociological and so I am asking you if you could forward information about our school to students and people who might be interested.

• Education: The Future of School
• Development, Sustainability and Globalization
• China: A World Superpower – Myth or Reality?

Prague Summer Schools are seven-day academic programs designed to bring together undergraduate and graduate students of various nationalities and academic backgrounds to enjoy their summer holidays in a unique academic and cultural environment.

I am also attaching a leaflet with the information, if you have the opportunity we would be very happy to forward or put it on display.

Thank you for helping us. It is rather difficult for us as a non-profit educational organisation to reach students who might potentially be interested.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me: horakova@scholaempirica.org
