Call for abstracts | Journal of Youth Studies (JYS) International Conference 2027

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the Journal of Youth Studies (JYS) International Conference 2027 at the University of Porto, Portugal. JYS, CIIE/JEDi, FPCEUP and ROOTS project are delighted to bring together a vibrant community of researchers, policymakers, students, educators, practitioners and others with an interest in Youth Studies to share knowledge, spark meaningful debate, and showcase the latest developments in this field.
About the Conference
Young people are growing up in a global context where democracy and critical and independent thinking are under attack. They exist in a world of conflicts where peace, safety, fundamental rights, trustworthy institutions, the welfare state and a secure and democratic future are not guaranteed. Their lives are becoming unrooted and insecure, and their voices are rarely heard. They are among those most affected by intersecting forms of discrimination, marginalisation and poverty, and are victims of waves of disruption that interrupt their lives and educational and employment pathways. This conference – the 5th that the Journal of Youth Studies has sponsored – will provide the opportunity to discuss, debate and further our knowledge about young people’s current lives and circumstances – and the futures that they might face. It will provide space to investigate the role that young people – and community organisations and social welfare and education professionals that work with young people – can play in creating a safer, more secure and more socially just world.
Over three days, the ROOTS & VOICES conference will encourage engagement, debate, learning (and conviviality!). Critical youth studies scholars and education, youth work and community practitioners will come together to share theories, methodologies, research findings and community projects and, in a fast-changing world, to take stock of what we know and what can be done. The conference will be broad in scope and inclusive of a wide range of interests, including:
1. Youth politics, activism and democracy
2. Youth transitions, social mobility and the life-course
3. Youth work, professionals and community intervention
4. Intersecting identities/ intersecting crises
5. Youth, sexualities and gender
6. Place, inequality and spatial justice
7. Youth in conflict and post-conflict societies

11. Intergenerational inequalities and solidarities

Seminário Internacional de Investigação | “Mobilidades, reprodução social e desigualdades globais. Novas abordagens feministas sobre as migrações internacionais”
(22 e 23 de outubro – Galiza, Faculdade de Sociologia da Universidade da Corunha)
O seminário pretende promover o diálogo entre investigadoras e investigadores que trabalham nas áreas das migrações internacionais, género, cuidados, reprodução social, envelhecimento e desigualdades globais, a partir de perspetivas feministas, interseccionais e transnacionais.
Partimos da convicção de que o diálogo entre os estudos migratórios e os estudos de género tem sido uma das contribuições mais relevantes das ciências sociais contemporâneas, permitindo compreender fenómenos como as cadeias globais de cuidados, a reprodução social transnacional, os processos de envelhecimento das populações migrantes e as desigualdades associadas à mobilidade internacional.
Os temas do seminário incluem, entre outros:
• Migrações femininas e divisão internacional do trabalho de cuidados
• Cuidados transnacionais e mobilidades
• Género, idade e desigualdades estruturais
• Processos de envelhecimento das mulheres migrantes
• Estratégias familiares e redes de apoio
• Governação reprodutiva e políticas públicas
Prazo para envio de resumos: 10 de julho de 2026.
O seminário procura igualmente promover formas mais plurais e inclusivas de produção e circulação do conhecimento científico. Nesse sentido, as comunicações poderão ser apresentadas em galego, português, espanhol e francês, valorizando a diversidade linguística e contribuindo para um debate académico mais aberto e inclusivo.

Open Call para o IV International Summer School “Future(s) In Dispute: Youth And Global Transformations”
(8th to 11th September 2026 – Porto, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto)
We live in a period marked by the intensification of multiple crises and the flourishing of profound social transformations, with a global scenario characterized by uncertainty, but also by the emergence of new means of collective action, resistance, and social imagination. The youth occupy a central position, being a key actor in the production of alternatives, leading social mobilizations, innovative cultural practices, emerging forms of political participation, and experiences in building fairer and more sustainable futures.
The IV International Summer School, «FUTURE(S) IN DISPUTE: YOUTH, GLOBAL CRISES AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATIONS» organized by the PhD Club of the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS-UP), will take place between September 8th and 11th, 2026, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP). This program aims to be an interdisciplinary space for meeting, experimentation, and dialogue with guest researchers, students, artists, activists, professionals, and members of civil society, specifically focused on critically reflecting on contemporary challenges and the possibilities of building possible futures.
We invite submissions of papers (up to 500 words, in english ou portuguese) addressing the following themes: Youth, political participation, and democracy; Housing crisis, urban inequalities, and the right to the city; Populisms, radicalization, extremism, and democratic challenges; LGBTQIA+ rights, gender, diversity, and social justice; Education, knowledge, and learning in times of digital transformation; Artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and youth cultures.
At a time when the future seems increasingly uncertain and contested, it is necessary to promote a collective construction of answers to the social challenges of the 21st century.

FACTCHECK Final Conference 2026 | Call for Papers Now Open
(11 e 12 de novembro – Porto, Faculdade de Direito da Umiversidade do Porto)
Este evento assinala o encerramento do projeto FACTCHECK, que representa o primeiro esforço de investigação em larga escala em Portugal dedicado ao estudo simultâneo da suscetibilidade à desinformação e da disseminação de notícias falsas.
Através de uma abordagem metodológica mista, que combina um inquérito extensivo e grupos focais com entidades-chave do ecossistema mediático, o projeto procura identificar os fatores que influenciam a vulnerabilidade à desinformação, compreender os perfis e motivações dos seus disseminadores e contribuir para iniciativas de literacia mediática e para a definição de políticas públicas.
O evento reúne investigadores, académicos e profissionais que trabalham nas áreas da desinformação, fact-checking, jornalismo, literacia mediática, inteligência artificial e regulação dos media.
As inscrições para participação no evento encontram-se abertas.
Encontra-se igualmente aberto o Call for Papers, sendo bem-vindos contributos nas seguintes áreas:
