Contemporary Perspectives in Family Research (CPFR), a series focusing on cutting-edge topics in family research around the globe, seeks manuscripts for a special volume titled: Families and Disasters: Vulnerability, Shock, and Resilience.
Around the globe, natural disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, droughts, and floods often strike with little warning and result in widespread devastation. Aside from the environmental and material damage, disasters also impact families in a multitude of manners, affecting family relationships, support networks, and dynamics. Before, during, and after such disasters, families quickly respond to dangers and attempt to support one another. In many instances, families provide the various forms of necessary support which local and national governments cannot. Afterwards, the recovery both involves families and affects families in many manners. Through their resilience and endurance, families provide for the recovery of individual lives and beyond.
This volume seeks topics from all theoretical and empirical perspectives, which explore families’ experiences and resilience in the face of disasters. Topics may include, but are not limited to: the impact of disasters on family structures and roles over the life course; childcare during disasters; determinants of vulnerability in post-disaster recovery, including the intersectionality of race, class and ethnicity in different types of families; the impact of disasters on mental health; coping strategies used by families to deal with stress, loss, displacement, and trauma; intergenerational resilience and knowledge transfer within families on disaster preparedness, mitigation and coping mechanisms; family preparedness and risk reduction strategies; post-disaster family displacement and reintegration challenges; extended family social support systems; long-term recovery and reconstruction; lasting effects on family identity, relationships, and livelihoods; and the role of technology in disaster preparedness and response by families.
Submission Guidelines
Manuscripts should be limited to approximately 10,000 words, adhere to APA format, and submitted as MS WORD documents Include an abstract of 150–250 words at the beginning of the manuscript. Dr. Rosalina Pisco Costa (University of Évora, Portugal) and Dr. Sampson Lee Blair (State University of New York, USA) will serve as coeditors for this volume. Please submit manuscripts directly to the editors at rosalina@uevora.pt and slblair@buffalo.edu. Manuscript submission to this call for papers implies a commitment to publishing with CPFR. All submissions must be original work and will undergo peer review. There are no submission or publication fees.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the Journal of Youth Studies (JYS) International Conference 2027 at the University of Porto, Portugal. JYS, CIIE/JEDi, FPCEUP and ROOTS project are delighted to bring together a vibrant community of researchers, policymakers, students, educators, practitioners and others with an interest in Youth Studies to share knowledge, spark meaningful debate, and showcase the latest developments in this field.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Young people are growing up in a global context where democracy and critical and independent thinking are under attack. They exist in a world of conflicts where peace, safety, fundamental rights, trustworthy institutions, the welfare state and a secure and democratic future are not guaranteed. Their lives are becoming unrooted and insecure, and their voices are rarely heard. They are among those most affected by intersecting forms of discrimination, marginalisation and poverty, and are victims of waves of disruption that interrupt their lives and educational and employment pathways. This conference – the 5th that the Journal of Youth Studies has sponsored – will provide the opportunity to discuss, debate and further our knowledge about young people’s current lives and circumstances – and the futures that they might face. It will provide space to investigate the role that young people – and community organisations and social welfare and education professionals that work with young people – can play in creating a safer, more secure and more socially just world.
Over three days, the ROOTS & VOICES conference will encourage engagement, debate, learning (and conviviality!). Critical youth studies scholars and education, youth work and community practitioners will come together to share theories, methodologies, research findings and community projects and, in a fast-changing world, to take stock of what we know and what can be done. The conference will be broad in scope and inclusive of a wide range of interests, including:
1. Youth politics, activism and democracy
2. Youth transitions, social mobility and the life-course
3. Youth work, professionals and community intervention
4. Intersecting identities/ intersecting crises
5. Youth, sexualities and gender
6. Place, inequality and spatial justice
7. Youth in conflict and post-conflict societies

9. Youth futures and social policy for youth
10. Young people, schools and communities
11. Intergenerational inequalities and solidarities
12. Violence and social harm
13. Social class, poverty and marginalisation
14. Migration, citizenship and youth rights

A “Configurações: Revista de Ciências Sociais” convida à submissão de artigos para um dossier temático dedicado às “Sociologias públicas no século XXI: legado, controvérsias e práticas em tempos de crise”, em homenagem a Michael Burawoy (1947–2025), cuja obra pioneira marcou de forma indelével o debate contemporâneo sobre o papel da sociologia nas sociedades democráticas.
Partindo da sua proposta programática, este número especial pretende revisitar, aprofundar e problematizar a sociologia pública como sociologias públicas, enquanto práticas, projetos e arenas de intervenção plurais.

Prazo alargado para submissão de propostas de comunicação ao Seminário “O Futuro da Educação em Debate”
A Comissão Organizadora do Seminário “O Futuro da Educação em Debate”, dedicado aos 40 anos da Lei de Bases do Sistema Educativo: entre o legado e os futuros possíveis, prorrogou até 21 de julho o prazo para a submissão de propostas de comunicação.
A iniciativa, que decorrerá em outubro de 2026 em Lisboa, Funchal, Évora e Porto e conta com o Alto Patrocínio de Sua Excelência o Presidente da República, pretende promover uma reflexão plural e crítica sobre a evolução das políticas educativas em Portugal desde 1986, bem como sobre os desafios que se colocam ao futuro da educação.
O seminário reunirá investigadores, docentes, estudantes, jovens investigadores, profissionais da educação, responsáveis institucionais e decisores políticos, contribuindo para o debate público sobre o legado democrático da Lei de Bases e os seus futuros possíveis.
