Publicación: “FOCUS ON SPANISH SOCIETY, SEPTEMBER 2025”
We are pleased to present you with a new issue of Funcas’ Focus on Spanish Society.
In the section Spain in Europe, we begin by examining Spain’s position in terms of life expectancy. In 2023, Spain recorded the highest life expectancy at birth among EU countries, 84 years, notably above the 81.7 EU average. Spain’s high ranking in longevity becomes even clearer when examining regional data. Madrid records the highest life expectancy of all NUTS2 regions in the European Union, at 86.1 years. In total, 15 Spanish autonomous communities rank among the top 50 European regions, out of 242 with available data.
In the section Public Opinion Trends, we highlight evidence showing that the traditional ideological gap between young men and women has reversed: young men now lean more to the right than their female peers. This shift is accompanied by marked differences in views on gender inequality in the labor market, with young women more likely to perceive disadvantages faced by women. In contrast, on other issues typically shaped by ideological divides, the attitudinal gap between young men and women in Spain remains relatively narrow.
Finally, in the section Follow-up Social Data, you can find updated statistics on Spanish demographics, families, the labor market, education, health, poverty, inequality, and social protection.
We hope you find this publication insightful and useful for your work, and we welcome your comments and suggestions.
