Abstract: Currently, we are witnessing an increased academic interest in the intersection between climate change and population ageing. Most of the studies focus on how climate change adversities impact the health, well-being, and everyday life of older adults in various contexts, some focus on how population ageing contributes to changing climate and environmental decline and a few also focus on how older generations help to mitigate or adapt themselves and their communities in the context of climate change and environmental decline. In my presentation, I will start by outlining the complex relationship among these overlapping phenomena and present the key theoretical framings: vulnerability theory and its application in climate and the “new” environmental gerontology. I will follow up by presenting the research results from qualitative case studies of two climatically distinct regions in the Czech Republic, adopting an interpretative, constructivist approach. The changing climate ontologies, with their palpable local impacts, are becoming more frequent; however, they are not necessarily recognised as such by those living with and through them. I will provide a closer look at how the meanings ascribed to changes contextualised in older people´s biographies affect risk perception and connect with the willingness to adjust everyday behaviour towards adaptation. Since meanings are embedded in intersubjectively shared cultural codes and repertoires, I will use theories of the post-socialist socio-cultural condition as an explanatory tool. I will conclude by outlining and discussing the inspirations for further research, in particular in the Czech Republic and Portugal.

Short bio: Lucie Galčanová Batista, PhD, is a sociologist and works as an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, where she serves as a guarantor of the bachelor´s degree programme in Environmental Studies and teaches social scientific methodology, environmental sociology, and organises ornithological excursions. Her major interests lie in the sociology of ageing and environmental gerontology: She is currently focusing on the intersections of population ageing and climate change, and studies the intergenerational transmission of environmentally friendly lifestyles in the context of post-socialist transformation. She is the (co-)author of numerous scholarly publications and a member of professional societies, e.g., a co-founder of the section on urban sociology of the Czech Sociological Association, and a member of the ESA RN01 Research Network on Ageing in Europe advisory board (as a former coordinator).
