[Science&You] Science&You 2021 International SciComm Conference : call for papers open!
Call for papers for Science&You 2021, International Science Communication Conference organized by Université de Lorraine (16 – 19 Nov. 2021), is open until February 1st.
Science & You brings together research and practice of science communication and public engagement, and offers a forum to reflect on the current state of practice, ventilate new ideas and lessons learned, and create new partnerships.
The theme of the 2021 Conference is “Science Communication: Take a Step Back to Move Forward”, with three subthemes:
1. Continued and emerging issues of science and technology developments:
Debates and communication on energy sourcing, Artificial Intelligence, autonomous cars, global warming and environmental pollution, genetic enhancement, novel foods and nutrition, private space exploration, digitalisation of health provision, issues of health in emergency situations, and many other science/technology topics subjects of debate within society.
2. ‘Collapsology’ worries
Recent research into trajectories of communication ‘collapse’: bullshit, fake-news, pseudo-science, misinformation, conspiracy theories, confirmatory bias, filter bubbles, echo chambering, rumour mongering, fiction rather than facts, replication crisis, or judgements based on biases and heuristics. We welcome papers analysing any of these dynamics on current controversies of science and technology.
3. Towards a reflexive practice of science communication
The ‘truth’ is known to be the first casualty of outright warfare, and it appears that science communication is increasingly caught up in a low-intensity ‘Wild West’ warfare in different theatres. Science communication faces a tensions between seeking to be tactically effective and creating a common understanding across ruptures and must ask: what sustains both purposes, also in global emergencies such as the Corona Virus of 2020?
The call for proposals is open until February 1st, midnight (GMT +1). Submitted proposals will then be evaluated by April 2021 by the Scientific Committee, chaired by Professor Martin W. Bauer, London School of Economics and Political Science.
